about

This song recounts the sick cult known as the People's Temple, from its inception to its infamous demise, the largest mass suicide in modern history. The first verse is told from the perspective of the insane, megalomaniac cult leader Jim Jones, the second verse is from the perspective of an outsider looking in (i.e.: a historian), and the third verse is from the perspective of the cult members themselves.

lyrics

I. Safehouse

Welcome to the meaning of life
The last great refuge from death and decay
If it all works out from here
I will begin to show you the way
Out there it’s not what you might think
There is no grand prize, there is no kings
There is no life goal for you to fulfill, and the
Goalie’s working overtime, he’s pulling the strings
Everything you thought you knew is gone
The minute you step out of here, apocalypse comes
The world as you know it will be coming to an end
In the end we’ll be the only ones
So pack up your bags and get settled here
If anything happens you know that I’m right here
The demons swirling around right now
Well, they come for us all, but friends, have no fear

Safehouse!
Survival machine!
Save us from our
Sworn enemies
The ones who want to
Enslave us all
By making us think that every-
thing’s our fault
Safehouse!
Survival machine!
Save us from our
Sworn enemies
The ones who want to
Enslave us all
By making us think that every-
thing’s our fault

The story goes, he grew up in a small town
His mother steering his path and passion
Surrounded by friends who didn’t look like him
But nonetheless shaped his worldly vision
Soon he found himself behind the pew
Tickling the ears of the congregation
Giving hope to a weary people
Preaching for a more perfect union
Little did they know, there was a side of him
That sought to control and manipulate
Where would it lead them? How would it end?
No one would know until it was too late

Safehouse!
Survival machine!
Save us from our
Sworn enemies
The ones who want to
Enslave us all
By making us think that every-
thing’s our fault
Safehouse!
Survival machine!
Save us from our
Sworn enemies
The ones who want to
Enslave us all
By making us think that every-
thing’s our fault

A brand new town, a new identity
California days, sunny and bright
A place to hide from the new regime
Of nuclear threats and annihilation

II. The Temple Deity

“I came to him and healed him. Oh yes I can heal you! Oh yes I can raise you from the dead! Oh yes I can open your blinded eyes! Oh yes I can get you out of prison! Oh yes I’ll give you a home! Oh yes I’ll take you in when you’re lonely! Oh yes I’ll make a heaven out of your hell! I’m in a war against your precious god! I’m at war with your precious god! I’ve come here to defeat your precious god!”

[instrumental]

III. On November 18, 1978, The Hippie Movement Died

Part of a cultural phenomenon; our
Home, the epicenter of social change
Soon there were circus tents filling up
Performances were seen as an act of God
Dishonesty became a small price to pay
The truth became something of an afterthought
‘Cause telling the people what they wanted to hear
Was all that mattered, that’s what he thought
Tyranny, blackmail, a top-down struggle
A cult of corruption, a great big con
Soon, we accepted that this was our fate
What once was a safehouse, was now our prison
And so he brought us down like lambs to the slaughter to
Our third and final destination
A place by the jungle, the middle of nowhere
The temple door was coated in poison!
